LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Strong winds and record heat return to the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area this afternoon.
WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:
A very hot and windy afternoon, with areas of low visibility possible in blowing dust.
A FIRE WEATHER WARNING is in effect from 11 AM to 9 PM CDT today, indicating this is a NO BURN DAY, for most of the viewing area.
A WIND ADVISORY is in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM CDT today for the northwestern and far southwestern viewing area.
Viewing area temperatures will peak this afternoon from near 90 to near 100 degrees. Well-above average and in record-high territory. My forecast high for Lubbock is 96°. The record high for the date is 94° which was set April 17, 1925, and then tied on the same date in 2006.
A strong southwesterly wind also will develop this afternoon. Sustained speeds from about 25 to 35 mph are expected. Gusts from around 40 to 50 mph are possible.
The heat and wind will combine to create critical wildfire danger today. Under this afternoon’s weather conditions, fires can develop easily, spread rapidly, and be very difficult to bring under control. Be conscientious in the outdoors if engage in activity which may involve an open flame, generate a spark, or excessive heat. Grilling in a grill in good repair is okay, but have a source of water handy.
Tonight, too, will be windy. Speeds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph are anticipated. Tonight otherwise will be mostly cloudy and cool.
Tomorrow will not be as hot, but it will be quite warm. And Friday will be windy. Another NO BURN DAY across the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area. Temperatures will peak in the 80s.
There is a very slight chance of thunderstorms late Friday and Friday night over the far eastern viewing area. Any activity will be in an environment supportive of some storms becoming severe, capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail. Be weather aware.
Storm and rain chances will be greatest late Saturday and Saturday night. Again, some storms may become severe. The main threats are expected to damaging wind gusts and hail. Watch for possible watches and warnings which may be issued. Locally heavy rainfall may accompany some storms as well.
At this time, guidance points to showers and thunderstorms ending by about sunrise Easter. A generally sunny day is expected Sunday. The morning will be a bit chilly, the afternoon may feel a little cool to some, but highs will be just a few degrees shy of average for the date.
