What To Do This Week (April 21 – 27)

Hope you’re still hungry after the holidays because cheap food is all over Calgary this week. Wake up bright and early on Monday morning and head over to Latino Food Market on Centre Street for their $1 empanada extravaganza. From 9 a.m. till noon, they’ll serve authentic Colombian empanadas for a dollar a piece, up to six per person. There’ll be beef, chicken and five different salsas to choose from, whether you like a mild spice or something that’ll make your eyes water.

Later in the week, head to 4th Street for Feast on Fourth. From Wednesday to Sunday, sample specials from local favourites for just $10. Fill up with a flight of mini pies from Elephant & Castle, then grab a Brulee’d banana split from Abbey’s Creations for dessert. And if you’re groggy from all the food, put some pep in your step with two small seasonal drinks from Phil & Sebastian. Check out 4streetcalgary.com for the complete list of food offerings.

Keep the penny-pinching going. Tuesday is opening night of Alberta Theatre Projects‘ production of Liars at a Funeral at the Martha Cohen Theatre, and it’s pay-what-you-can! This play by Sophi Fabilli promises lots of laughs, and seats are selling out fast. You’ll want to show up early because pay-what-you-can tickets are only sold at the box office. If you can’t make it opening night, the play runs until May 11. Check out the Alberta Theatre Projects website for showtimes and tickets for the rest of the run.

The laughs keep coming on Wednesday night with The KinkonautsImprovised Macbeth at the BLOX Arts Centre. It won’t be like any Shakespeare play you’ve seen before – or will ever see again. The show starts at 8, so grab a bite to eat beforehand at Posto Pizzeria right around the corner. Wednesdays are their date night special. For $55, you’ll get a pizza to share, a dessert, and a litre of red or white wine. Be sure to drizzle your ‘za with some chilli oil to take it to the next level.

Talespin Trivia brings all the nostalgia to The Establishment Brewing Company on Thursday night with Radio Retro. Recruit up to six of your friends to name tunes from the 60s all the way to the 2000s. Beat out the competition and win a $100 gift card to Establishment Brewing! It’s $5 to enter, and you can reserve a spot on the Establishment’s website. Check out Talespin’s Instagram and our latest issue on stands for a complete list of their monthly events.

If you enjoyed Establishment’s beer, keep the drinks coming on Friday night at The Attic with the Leopard Lounge comedy sketch show. Karla Marx returns for this monthly show to spill the truths of old Hollywood and Vegas. While embracing the camp of it all, sip on $7 tall boys of Establishment’s finest brews. There’ll also be prohibition-themed cocktails, pizza and pasta. It’s $25 for general admission, but just $20 if you sit at the bar – more money for cold ones!

Saturday marks the return of the Samaritans Club‘s semi-annual Super Thrift Sale. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Sunnyside Community Association will be packed with folks looking to snag a sweet deal. Whether searching for clothes, decor, or just a good book, you will find something. Remember, it’s streetside parking only, so you may want to make the 10-minute walk from the Sunnyside LRT station.

If you’re looking for fresh ink, head to the National on 10th for Hometown Market’s Spring Edit vintage market. Local tattoo artist Gigi Turner will offer flash tattoos on-site for the event. The market runs from 12 to 4 p.m. and costs $5 to enter, but if you’re really eager (and want to be first in line for a tat), you can pay $25 to get in an hour early. Check out Home Town Market on Instagram to get the link for tickets.
