What the Tech: Creative Mother’s Day gifts

Mom blogs, YouTube channels, and Etsy shops are booming. Many moms launch side hustles once their kids are in school or have moved out, and nearly half of all parents have some sort of side gig. With Mother’s Day approaching, let’s consider gifts for the creative moms who are starting businesses or just want to be more organized.

Today’s stay-at-home moms are more than caretakers and unpaid Uber drivers; they’re creators and entrepreneurs. Millions of moms are building businesses. There are 8 million sellers on Etsy, and about 80 percent of them are moms. YouTube is also filled with mommy vloggers, with some turning their side hustles into full-time careers.

Many small businesses start right at the kitchen table. One tool helping creative moms turn ideas into income is a small thermal printer. Compact Bluetooth printers are popular for creating custom stickers, organizing the home, and adding a personal touch to gift boxes. I asked Munbyn, maker of the printer I hear moms talking about, to loan me a unit for a few days. Etsy shop owners use them to print shipping labels and branding elements. Load a roll of labels, open the app, and start designing. You’re only limited by your imagination. Hundreds of Etsy sellers offer their own sticker designs, which also make great gifts.

These are also good for labeling things around the house and printing QR codes.

Lighting is important, especially for photos, videos, or Zoom calls. If mom already has a circle light for her needs, I suggest upgrading her to the Lume Cube Edge desk light. It provides a soft, professional glow for her desk and video calls. It’s easily adjustable to throw light at whatever she wants to illuminate. The Edge clamps to a desk to keep it out of the way. It’s sleek looking, adjustable, and offers multiple brightness levels and color temperatures.

If she already uses Canva’s free version, Canva Pro is a great upgrade. It adds a huge range of tools for designing logos, planners, calendars, websites, and videos. Recent updates added AI tools and background removal. At $13 a month or $120 a year, it’s perfect for moms with a creative streak and a flair for design.

Mother’s Day is about celebrating who she is and who she wants to be next. That hobby that starts at the kitchen table might just turn into her next big venture.
