Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk took a pair of cheap shots at Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner at the end of Game 1 in an attempt to injure the gifted playmaker.

As the clock wound down, the puck was behind the Leafs’ net, well away from Matthew Tkachuk and Mitch Marner. That didn’t stop Tkachuk from attempting to injure Marner.

First, the Panthers agitator tried to slew-foot the Leafs forward along the boards, with Marner narrowly jumping out of the way.

Missing his first attempt to injure Marner, Tkachuk then went after the 28-year-old winger with a slash to the back of the knee followed by a cross-check.

To Marner and the Leafs’ credit, they skated away from Tkachuk’s attempts to antagonize them, celebrating their Game 1 victory with Joseph Woll, who played very well in relief of Stolarz, despite not seeing action in 18 days.

With Game 2 set to go Wednesday, it will be interesting to see if the Leafs respond appropriately to Tkachuk and Bennett or if they will continue to play between whistles and let the Panthers parade to the penalty box – if the officials chose to use their whistles of course.
