Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 14 seed, defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4 to move into the third round of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Mágica on Friday.
Ruud, ranked No 15, will face the winner of the match between American Sebastian Korda, the No 23 seed, and Italian wildcard Federico Cina next.
Rinderknech, ranked No 76, won against Russian Roman Safiullin (7-6 (4), 6-1) in the previous round of the tournament.
