Before the Kentucky Derby, another one of horse racing’s oldest races provides fireworks at Churchill Downs the day prior.

Celebrating its 151st run, the Kentucky Oaks will once again serve as the opening act to the Run for the Roses in Louisville, Kentucky, with a post time of 6 p.m. ET on Friday, May 2.

The Kentucky Oaks is scheduled to be the 11th race on Friday at Churchill Downs and will feature 13 horses this year after Five G was scratched on Friday due to a defection.

Thorpedo Anna won the Kentucky Oaks last year. Its trainer, Kenny McPeek, followed that victory up by winning the Kentucky Derby with Mystik Dan — making him the first trainer since 1952 and the fourth overall to win both races in the same year.

One potential contender in this year’s Kentucky Oaks is Good Cheer, which is running out of the No. 11 post position and enters Friday’s race undefeated in six starts. Horsing Nation’s Ed DeRosa is calling Simply Joking a potential dark horse candidate because of Simply Joking’s speed.

The Kentucky Oaks is the sister version of the Kentucky Derby, as it is comprised of only 3-year-old fillies.

It always takes place the day before the Kentucky Derby runs at Churchill Downs, and has a purse of $1.5 million, per the Kentucky Derby website. The winner of the Kentucky Oaks is given “the iconic ‘Lilies for the Fillies’ garland” in the winners’ circle after the race.

The 2025 Kentucky Oaks is the 151st running of the event, making it one of the longest-running sporting events in the United States.
