WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Andor season 2, episodes 7, 8, and 9!Andor season 2 just showed us the origins of one of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s best and most inspirational lines. Andor season 2, episodes 7, 8, and 9 finally showed the Ghorman Massacre and its fallout on Rebel Alliance leaders like Mon Mothma, and it was nothing short of amazing. Not only did audiences get the emotional tragedy of the Ghorman people, but also the violence and superb acting we’ve come to expect from Andor.
With only three episodes left in Andor season 2, audiences can start expecting to see more direct connections to Rogue One. The episodes focusing on the Ghorman Massacre also gave us more connections to the film, especially with the reprogramming of K-2SO. However, there’s one rallying cry from the movie that made an unexpected appearance in Andor season 2, and the origin of it is just perfect.
The Best Rogue One Line Hails From The Ghorman Massacre
And It Came From The Most Unexpected Person
It came as a shock when Thela, the hotel worker who had appeared briefly in earlier episodes of Andor, spoke the words “rebellions are built on hope” to Cassian Andor. While it did come from a random hotel worker, this makes perfect sense for the Rebellion, as it is truly a grassroots movement that favors the little guy who has been systematically disenfranchised. It’s people like Thela that have hope for a rebellion, as they’ve been impacted the most and, likely, the worst.

Andor season 2 episodes 7-9 features a wide collection of Easter eggs and references to Rogue One, Star Wars Rebels, and more from the greater galaxy.
The rebels in Andor up until this point had largely been built on anger, frustration, and bitterness, but Thela and his line about hope show a different, more emboldening sense of direction. The rebels audiences have met within Luthen Rael’s circle all suffer from this bitterness, so much so that they sometimes lack the foresight to see what they’re fighting for, whereas the little guy just entering the fight has the hope that’ll drive the movement.
Cassian Becomes Ghorman’s True Legacy
And It Shows His Development As A Character
While the Cassian audiences have seen the last few episodes might not necessarily believe that rebellions are built on hope, by the time audiences see him in Rogue One, he definitely believes it. By that time, we will have seen Cassian Andor become a different kind of rebel. Instead of focusing on the bitterness and hatred that initially encouraged him to join Luthen, he changes to fighting out of hope, even if it seems far away.
The line encompasses the spirit of what the Ghorman people were fighting for: hope that things would get better.
In this way, Cassian taking on the phrase “rebellions are built on hope” makes him the legacy of Ghorman and its massacred people. The line encompasses the spirit of what the Ghorman people were fighting for: hope that things would get better. Not only did Cassian Andor survive the Ghorman Massacre, he clearly carried it with him until his death in Rogue One.
Jyn Erso Echoes The Message Of Ghorman
It’s Not A Choice, It’s A Belief
Jyn Erso’s speech in Rogue One, when she tells Rebel Alliance leaders that fighting isn’t about having a choice but instead believing that there is hope to be found. This not only stands up to the leaders who don’t like or believe in the Rebellion’s odds against the Empire, but also shows that she’s taken to Cassian’s message that rebellions are built on hope. While it’s likely that Cassian never told Jyn about the phrase’s origin on Ghorman, she’s still a messenger who reflects them.
Jyn’s speech is a declaration that rebellions, including the one against the Empire, are ones of hope. While the theme of hope is echoed throughout Star Wars, in titles like Andor and Rogue One, it becomes more obvious because there is nothing left to focus on than the hope that things will get better. Andor showing that one of the best rallying cries of the Rebellion comes from a side character is the perfect way to demonstrate the change in Cassian Andor, but also shows the basis of what the Rebellion will become.
Andor‘s final 3 episodes will premiere May 13th at 6 PM PST/9 PM EST on Disney+.
