
MELFORT, SK – Round 1 of the 2025 Canterra Seeds Cup went to Weyburn.
Ethan Dekay scored the winner in alone at the 6:25 mark of the third period, on a feed from Jerome Maharaj, and the Red Wings grabbed Game 1 in Melfort with a 2-1 victory over the Mustangs.
Angelo Zol was stellar in making 27 stops in the win, while Kristian Coombs responded with 26 saves in defeat.
Melfort’s Zayden Sadlemyer notched his first of the post-season on a breakaway to open the scoring at 3:37 of the first period after a friendly bounce at the Weyburn blue line.
Maharaj tied the contest on a shorthanded break with just under four minutes remaining in the second period to send the contest to the third period even at one.
It was Melfort’s first defeat at home in a meaningful game since Feb. 21, a span of 11 games.
Both teams went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
