UPDATE: The Hood Canal Bridge has reopened and traffic is moving across the span normally Tuesday morning, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The Hood Canal Bridge closed Monday due to a mechanical problem, Washington State Department of Transportation announced, and will be closed to traffic until further notice.
The state announced the closure began around 1 p.m. during a routine closure to allow boats to pass through. The Hood Canal Bridge has the ability to open and close to allow marine traffic to enter and exit the canal.
There is no timeline for a reopening as of around 4:30 p.m. Monday, and crews are currently working to get the bridge span working again. Drivers headed to the Olympic Peninsula from Kitsap or returning must drive south on Highways 3 (Kitsap side) or 101 (Jefferson County side) for the time being. That detour is estimated to add about three hours of travel time, WSDOT said.
