The Detroit Pistons finally flipped the postseason script with a gritty 100-94 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. After letting Game 1 slip through their fingers, the Pistons responded with composure and intensity in Game 2, leveling the series at 1-1 as it heads back to Detroit.
In a post on X with heartfelt appreciation, Magic Johnson showered praise for Cade Cunningham, who scored a team-high 33 points.
“Pistons guard Cade Cunningham showed America he’s a superstar in the making scoring 33 points tonight in their win over the New York Knicks!” Johnson wrote.
The NBA legend also hailed Dennis Schroeder as he “scored 20 points and hit the biggest shot of the game to break the tie that helped the Pistons pull it out in the stretch 100-94.” Johnson concluded by acknowledging the thrilling and action-packed game, “This Pistons vs. Knicks Series is great to watch!”
In Game 2 of the series against the New York Knicks, Cunningham delivered a standout performance, playing 42 minutes and 24 seconds on the floor. He shot an impressive 52.4% from the field, making 11 of his 21 attempts. While his three-point shooting was off (1-of-4 for 25.0%), he excelled at the free-throw line, hitting 10 of 12 attempts for an 83.3% conversion rate. Cunningham also grabbed 12 rebounds, including 1 offensive board, and dished out 3 assists. He added 2 steals, and despite committing 5 turnovers, he ended the game with 33 points, leading the Pistons to a crucial victory.
Schroder played 29 minutes and 15 seconds in the game, contributing 20 points. He was also efficient from beyond the arc, making 3 of his 5 three-point attempts. On the defensive end, he grabbed 2 rebounds and recorded 3 assists.
