Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath is in hospital, the city said, after “sustaining an injury in an accident.”
The office of the mayor said Tuesday evening in a press release Horwath is awaiting surgery, as well as further examination to “determine the full extent” of her treatment needs.
The city also said the mayor may need to take a short medical leave, depending on her health providers’ guidance.
“Mayor Horwath remains in good spirits and is in regular communication with her team,” said the press release.
The city did not provide any further details about the nature or timing of the accident.
On Tuesday morning, she had posted on social media, congratulating Liberal leader Mark Carney and local federal candidates on the election results.
“Thank you to all candidates who put their names forward,” she wrote. “I look forward to working with our federal partners on shared priorities — from housing and transit to economic growth and community well-being and safety.”
Horwath has been Hamilton’s mayor since October 2022. She previously represented Hamilton Centre as a Member of Provincial Parliament and was the leader of Ontario’s New Democratic Party.
