George Clooney’s ‘Jay Kelly’ Sets December Release Date on Netflix

Noah Baumbach‘s “Jay Kelly,” starring George Clooney as a man named Jay Kelly, has set a Dec. 5 streaming premiere date on Netflix. The film, which also stars Adam Sandler, Billy Crudup and Laura Dern, will also receive a theatrical release three weeks earlier, beginning on Nov. 14.

Along with unveiling the release details for “Jay Kelly,” Netflix debuted the above first-look image of the film, along with an enigmatic tagline: “Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.”

The release plan for “Jay Kelly” follows Netflix’s usual blueprint for fall debuts angling for awards attention: an Academy-qualifying theatrical release earlier in the fall, followed by a streaming debut closer to the end of the year.

The cast for “Jay Kelly” also includes Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Riley Keough, Emily Mortimer, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Jim Broadbent, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohrwacher, Lenny Henry, Josh Hamilton and Greta Gerwig. Baumbach and Emily Mortimer co-wrote the screenplay. Baumbach, David Heyman and Amy Pascal are producers.

“Jay Kelly” marks the second feature under Baumbach’s multi-year deal to write and direct films for Netflix. He previously adapted the Don DeLillo novel “White Noise” into a feature for the streamer. The film starred Gerwig, Adam Driver and Don Cheadle and was released on Netflix in December 2022 after playing Venice Film Festival and New York Film Festival.

Prior to “White Noise,” Baumbach wrote and directed the 2019 divorce drama “Marriage Story,” which was one of Netflix’s biggest awards successes that year. It earned six Academy Award nominations and one win for Laura Dern in the supporting actress category.
