BOSTON (WHDH) – From lotto signs to traffic signals, the lights were out Wednesday in Roxbury, as well as several other Boston neighborhoods leaving those who lived here with quite a surprise.
The outage affected 25,000 homes and businesses across Roxbury, Dorchester, and the South End. It lasted roughly an hour.
The outage may have happened on a bright, sunny day but the impact was still felt from intersections, to classrooms.
Krystal Semper explained how dismissal was held at the local Boston public school where she teaches.
“We just had no power, so we had no way of calling buses, we had no way of communicating, so staff had to run around the building to say this bus is there, this bus is here,” said Semper. “Parents were coming in looking for their kids so we had to do it the old school way, word of mouth.”
Eversource told 7NEWS, “Our crews have restored power to our approximately 25,000 customers affected by a power outage that occurred shortly after 2:30pm at one of our substations in Andrew Square, which serves the areas of South Boston and the South End. We’re continuing to investigate why the outage occurred and appreciate our crews’ quick response to restore power to 90% of customers in 50 minutes, with our remaining customers restored in just over an hour.”
Power has since been restored, according to officials. What caused the power outage at the substation remains under investigation.
