ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith says Los Angeles Clippers forward Ben Simmons is ‘stealing money’

Los Angeles Clippers forward Ben Simmons, who spent his first four NBA seasons with the Sixers, is under fire again for not being more aggressive on offense—a change his coach wants to see as the NBA playoffs begin.

On Friday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take”, the discussion shifted to Simmons after Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue said he wanted Simmons to contribute more on offense. ESPN analyst and commentator Stephen A. Smith criticized Simmons for not doing more even after earning $39.2 million for the 2024-2025 season, according to Basketball Reference, which ranks his salary as the 27th highest in the league.

“The fact Ty Lue said what he said is more evidence that Ben Simmons has been stealing money,” Smith said. “You have to ask a professional basketball player getting paid what he’s getting paid to shoot and maximize his potential. Do you understand that when we looked at Ben Simmons with the potential? This brother is so special as a talent, but my Lord, what a disappointment. It’s all because of a willingness—or lack thereof—rather than ability. I have nothing else to say because I’m not going to say anything nice.”

Simmons, who was traded by the Nets this season, has played in 18 games for the Clippers, averaging 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in just over 16 minutes per game.

Former NBA forward Danny Green, Simmons’ former teammate with the Sixers, was also on the show. He shook his head when Smith spoke but took a different approach.

“I got a chance to play with Ben and I had some great opportunities and career highs in three-point attempts,” Green said. “I just think he’s in point guard mode too much, so yes, he does need to be more aggressive, but he’s used to being a point guard, and they don’t need that. It’s a mental hump that he needs to get over, but we’re being nice today. I’m not going to say he’s stealing money.”
