Edmonton construction season kicks off with more projects breaking ground this week

You’ve probably noticed construction zones all over Edmonton, but you might want to brace yourselves as construction season is only just beginning.

The city is undertaking more than 70 construction projects this year, including 11 neighbourhood renewals and the West Valley Line LRT.

“Edmonton’s population is increasing quickly, and the city has a responsibility to serve residents and businesses by taking care of the infrastructure we have, while balancing the need for expansion and growth that’s happening in our city,” said Craig Walbaum, acting deputy city manager of integrated infrastructure services.

This plan will cost $7 billion as part of the 2023-2026 capital budget, but that’s before tariffs and other factors come into play.

“Many of our projects are locked in for a final cost, but we also have contract elements in there where, if we have unforeseen circumstances, we do look at navigating that with our contractors. It’ll depend on where our project is at in its process,” said Walbaum.

And here is an update on two major parks. Hawrelak Park is in the final year of its rehabilitation, and crews are on track to finish the new Warehouse Park downtown on schedule. Both are expected to open in early 2026.
