An earthquake of 4.0 magnitude on the richer scale hit Pakistan on the intervening night of Friday-Saturday. The epicentre of the quake was in Balochistan and it occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (located just 10 km below the Earth’s surface).

Shallow earthquakes, with a depth of less than 70 km, tend to cause more damage on the surface compared to deeper ones. At a depth of only 10 km, which is considered very shallow, the seismic waves travel a shorter distance to reach the surface, resulting in stronger and more destructive shaking near the epicentre.

Further details are awaited.
