The 78th Cannes Film Festival moves into its sixth day with a diverse slate of world premieres, including Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love that Remains, Thierry Klifa’s The Richest Women in the World, the latest from Lav Diaz, Magellan, and Kawamura Genki’s Exit 8.

Wes Anderson makes his fourth appearance at the Croisette to present the world premiere of The Phoenician Scheme, starring a stellar ensemble including Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson, and many others, at the Palais des Festivals on May 18th.

Anderson was joined by the stars of the film, including Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Benicio del Toro, Rupert Friend, Mia Threapleton, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Antonia Desplat and Bill Murra,y who all walked the red carpet at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, Sunday, May 18.

Set against a backdrop of immense wealth and international intrigue, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme unfolds as a darkly comedic espionage tale. The film centers on the fraught relationship between Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a European armaments and aviation magnate of extraordinary wealth, and his daughter, Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton), a nun unexpectedly named as his sole heir. This pivotal act ignites a chain of perilous events, turning them into targets for a host of dangerous adversaries, including scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists, and relentless assassins, as Korda pursues a new business undertaking.

Buzzy world premieres this week have included Ari Aster’s star-studded film Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone; Die My Love, with Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence;  New Wave, directed by Richard Linklater, starring Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, and Zoey Deutch;  Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water; and director Dominik Moll’s Dossier 137 starring Léa Drucker. 

Premieres taking place at the festival next are Eleanor The Great, starring June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Sentimental Value from Joachim Trier, starring Renate Reinsve; Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, with Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright and A$SAP Rocky; Alpha from Julia Ducournau; Carla Simone with Romeria,  and Tarik Saleh with The Eagles of the Republic.

Over the next week, the jury, led by Juliette Binoche, will evaluate the 21 films in competition and award the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on May 24, immediately followed by the screening of Momoko Sato’s Dandelion’s Odyssey.
