Apple is expected to unveil its next lineup of devices in September, and the iPhone 17 series is reportedly among the highlights. According to recent leaks, significant improvements are coming to the cameras across the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max models, marking a noticeable leap from the iPhone 16 range.
Both the main and front-facing cameras are rumored to receive notable upgrades. One of the standout features could be the addition of 8K video recording capabilities—a feature already present on several Android flagships in 2025.
iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max camera
With the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, Apple introduced 48MP sensors for both the primary and ultra-wide cameras, and these enhancements later extended to the standard iPhone models. However, the telephoto lens remained at 12MP—until now.
New leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max may finally get a significant boost, featuring a 48MP telephoto lens, marking a major leap from the current 12MP sensor found in the iPhone 16 Pro series.
Upgrades aren’t limited to the rear cameras. Reports indicate Apple could enhance the front-facing camera as well. The iPhone 17, along with the Pro variants, might be equipped with a 24MP selfie camera, doubling the resolution of the current 12MP TrueDepth sensor.
Additional enhancements are expected for the Pro models, particularly in video features. For the first time, Apple may include native support for adjustable aperture and dual video recording—allowing users to capture video using both the front and rear cameras simultaneously.
On the display front, Apple might finally bring a smoother viewing experience to its base models. The standard iPhone 17 could come with a 120Hz refresh rate, a notable improvement over the 60Hz panels used in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
