A rivalry that dates back to 2013 is set to be renewed on Friday, when Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut lock horns in the Mutua Madrid Open 2025 Round-2. Just one week ago, the two players were competing in Sascha’s home country – at the BMW Open in Munich. Now, they have moved over to the Spanish capital, where RBA will receive the majority of the support. Who will emerge victorious?
Alexander Zverev won the prestigious BMW Open title in Munich last week in front of a capacity home crowd. After the win, he was handed his lavish car by long-time friend Dominic Thiem. Last year, the World No. 2 was outplayed by Francisco Cerúndolo in Round-4 at La Caja Magica. Yet, his 29-7 record and 83.8% service game win rate on this surface over the past 12 months is encouraging to put it mildly. The German has reached three finals here – winning the title twice.
Roberto Bautista Agut’s best performances this season have been Round of 16 finishes in Dubai and Bucharest. The 37-year-old is ranked No. 55 in the world (career-best No. 9). Bautista Agut has a 70% win percentage on serve, and is seeking his first title of the year. He defeated national compatriot Jaume Munar 6-4 2-6 6-3 in Round-1 on Wednesday.
Alexander Zverev vs Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head Record
The head to head record between Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut is 5-2 in favour of the higher ranked German player.
Zverev and RBA have faced each other in 2013, 2015, twice each in 2017 and 2018, and 2023. Unsurprisingly, the generational gap is evident – while a prime Bautista Agut eased past the young rising star in their opening two duels, Zverev managed to claw his way into the ascendancy soon after. The most recent tussle between the two players was in Monte Carlo 2023 – where Zverev won in straight sets.

Although RBA is high on confidence after winning his opening round, this may just be the end of the road in Madrid.
